How should you get from Guarulhos Airport into Sao Paulo?
Choose rail when its operating hours, terminal connection and onward route fit your arrival; choose an authorized taxi or app ride when a confirmed door-to-door trip better suits your luggage, mobility or timing. The airport railway station is not the terminal arrivals hall. Check that first connection as carefully as the city journey, and confirm current service and prices before committing.
This guide concerns Guarulhos Airport, GRU, not another Sao Paulo airport. We checked official transport and airport information on September 7, 2026. The comparisons below are desk-researched editorial judgments, not reports of rides we took or promises about journey times.
Start with the complete hotel address and your arrival terminal. "Central Sao Paulo" is too broad a destination for a useful comparison.
Which option fits which arrival?
Use the table to choose what to investigate first, not to book without checking the actual route.
| Option | Worth investigating when | Main planning cost |
|---|---|---|
| Expresso Aeroporto plus onward city transport | Your destination works with the rail network and all connections operate when needed | Terminal-to-station transfer, waiting and the final connection |
| Regular Line 13-Jade plus connecting trains | The connection through Engenheiro Goulart fits your journey | More route-planning decisions than a direct hotel ride |
| Authorized airport taxi | A confirmed pickup and destination address matter more than the lowest rail fare | Obtain the actual quote and allow for road conditions |
| Airport-authorized app pickup | You can use the app and follow its terminal-specific meeting instructions | Variable quote, vehicle capacity and locating the assigned pickup sector |
Our recommendation is to compare the number of separate decisions after landing. For one traveler with manageable luggage and a straightforward rail destination, the train may be a practical first candidate. For a group needing particular vehicle space or assistance, confirm a suitable road transfer before treating a generic car icon as a solution.
Neither option is universally fastest or best. The usable choice is the one whose entire route has been checked.
What is the difference between the airport express and Line 13?
CPTM's airport guide lists the Expresso Aeroporto between Aeroporto-Guarulhos and Palmeiras-Barra Funda at R$5.40. It also identifies the regular Line 13-Jade option, connecting with Line 12-Safira at Engenheiro Goulart.
Treat those as different service choices. Confirm the train's destination and service with station staff before boarding. Do not assume every departure from the airport station follows the express route.
The CPTM tariff table separately lists R$5.40 for a single metropolitan train ticket. Neither that entry nor the express fare is a complete hotel-transfer quote. For three full-fare passengers, the express portion would be 3 x R$5.40 = R$16.20. Add any separately charged onward travel; do not compare that partial figure against a door-to-door vehicle quote.
Before choosing rail, use our first-trip Metro guide to write the onward line, direction, transfer and destination exit. The airport section and the city section need to join into one usable plan.
How do you reach the railway station from your terminal?
CPTM states that the connection between Aeroporto-Guarulhos station and the terminals can be made free by bus or aeromovel, the airport people mover. That does not establish that both operate at every hour.
The airport's rail access page separates the station from the passenger terminals and describes connecting transfers. Ask the airport information desk for the currently operating connection from your actual terminal, including its boarding point and next departure.
People-mover operation has been changing. An Aerom update dated August 19, 2026 describes an evolving operating phase and separate tests. It is dated background, not a verified timetable for your arrival day. We could not independently confirm a current full-day public schedule from AeroGRU's website, so this guide does not supply one.
For terminal-to-terminal buses, GRU's internal-transfer page currently lists 04:00-00:00 operation and waits of up to 15 minutes. It places stops at arrivals: Terminal 1's first curb, Terminal 2's west curb and Terminal 3's third curb. Confirm signage and staff instructions locally. These published internal-transfer details are not proof of the next station-bound connection.
Do not walk along airport access roads to substitute for an unavailable transfer. Stay on designated passenger routes and ask staff to identify an authorized alternative.
Where do authorized taxis and app rides meet passengers?
GRU identifies Guarucoop on its official taxi page, listing a 24-hour service and counters at Terminal 1 departures/arrivals, Terminal 2 east and west arrivals, and Terminal 3 arrivals. Ask the counter for the fare to the complete address and confirm the vehicle meets your party's needs.
Do not infer a price from the phrase "fixed rates." The relevant quote is for your destination and circumstances. Ask how payment works and whether the total includes applicable charges before accepting the trip.
For Terminal 2 app rides, the airport's Praca Pick-Up instructions direct passengers to the designated area outside arrivals. The partner app assigns the pickup sector. GRU currently lists Uber, 99 and Rhino as participating services.
That instruction is specifically for Terminal 2; do not apply its meeting point automatically to Terminal 1 or 3. Follow your app's current airport instructions and official signs, and seek staff assistance if the directions disagree. Verify the booked vehicle and driver details before entering. Do not accept an unsolicited replacement ride.
How do you compare time without inventing a transfer duration?
Build a door-to-door estimate from separate stages. Our suggested worksheet starts when you are ready to leave the arrivals area, not when the aircraft lands.
For rail, include the terminal connection, train wait, rail journey, onward transfer and station-to-hotel stage. For a road transfer, include reaching the meeting point, any pickup wait, the current driving estimate and unloading at the correct entrance.
Here is a fictional arithmetic example, not a GRU timetable or travel-time forecast:
| Planning component | Hypothetical allowance |
|---|---|
| Reach the station connection | 15 minutes |
| Wait for the chosen train | 25 minutes |
| Train journey | 35 minutes |
| Onward travel and hotel entrance | 30 minutes |
| Total after leaving arrivals | 105 minutes |
The sum is 15 + 25 + 35 + 30 = 105 minutes, or 1 hour 45 minutes. Change the wait to 45 minutes and the total becomes 125 minutes, or 2 hours 5 minutes. The exercise shows why a quoted train-running time is not a hotel arrival time.
Replace every allowance with current information for your journey. Keep uncertain stages explicitly uncertain rather than assigning zero minutes. A real arrival may also require immigration, baggage collection and other airport formalities before this worksheet begins.
What should you confirm for luggage or accessibility?
Ask about the exact passenger route, not merely whether a train or car has an accessibility symbol. Confirm the terminal boarding point, assistance available, lifts needed during transfers, onward station exit and hotel entrance.
For a vehicle booking, specify passenger count, number and size of bags, mobility equipment and any required child restraint. Obtain confirmation that the particular vehicle and service can meet those needs. Do not assume that a standard booking category guarantees suitable equipment.
For rail, plan how each traveler will manage bags through the complete connection without blocking doors, aisles or priority spaces. Follow station and airport staff instructions. If a needed accessible connection is unavailable, ask for a workable alternative before leaving the staffed area.
Our Sao Paulo lodging comparison helps evaluate the final address. A hotel near a station on a map can still have an unsuitable entrance or a difficult last section for your needs.
What is your fallback if the flight arrives late?
Write a fallback before departure: an authorized taxi counter, a confirmed pickup provider or another arrangement verified with the property. Check its availability and contact method independently. A daytime rail plan is not automatically a late-night plan.
Send the hotel an original message like: "Our arrival may be delayed. Please confirm your reception hours, exact vehicle entrance and procedure if we arrive after the desk closes." Keep its reply offline alongside the address.
At the airport, reassess the full journey after you know the actual time. If a connection has stopped, do not continue toward it solely because it appears in an old screenshot. Ask official staff about the next viable option and confirm the total price before paying for a replacement.
Save one short arrival note: terminal, chosen transport, verified meeting point, hotel address, necessary assistance and fallback. That is more useful after a flight than a list of routes whose operating details have never been checked.
